The name of Patnitop originated from the name “Patan Da Talab” which loosely translates to “Pond of the Princess”. It is believed that during ancient times, there was a beautiful and serene pond that existed in this place and a certain lovely princess used to visit it daily and bathe in there. There is a local youth hostel nearby and some part of the pond is still in existence near this hostel. Historians believe that the British had troubles recording the Indian name of this place due to which they had to change it from “Patan Da Talab” to Patnitop.

If you are here, you should head to Billo ki Powri, which is a staircase carved across a mountain face and it consists of 270 steps. It is a moderate difficulty level trek and takes around an hour or two to finish. Similarly another noteworthy trek to have here would be Patnitop to Sudh Mahadev. it is a 15 kilometre trek that takes around 5 to 6 hours to finish. It is quite famous among pilgrims as well as it ends at the historic and ancient Shiv temple at Sudh Mahadev. This temple is said to be around 2800 years old and the path of this trek gives breathtaking views over the Chenani Mantalai Valley. The trek over the un-named ridge is also quite exciting but requires a good amount of experience in trekking earlier. It leads to an un-named ridge near the town of Shivgarh and it involves a risky and difficult ascent. It has an unmarked trail and requires lot of prior experience and guidance as mentioned earlier. There are a large number of hotels in Patnitop that offer great accommodation and other facilities to give you a memorable stay in this town.
