Sports Bikes In India – A Trend That Is Catching On


In India, sports bikes were not very popular until very recently. In the earlier days, only very few people could afford a bike or a scooter. In those times, a sports bike was something unheard of. However, as the standard of living of people became better and people had more income that is dispensable, more and more bikes and super bikes became affordable.

So what exactly makes a sports bike different from the commuter bikes? It is not merely the looks, which differentiate these bikes from the ordinary bikes. The sports bikes are styled and designed differently and what matters is engine. The sports bikes tend to be speedier, are equipped with better acceleration and braking features, is smoother on sharp bends and curves. However, they are less comfortable and economical when compared with the commuter type bikes. The major factors that put these bikes apart are that they satisfy the need for speed and thrill.


Although the Indian sports bike market is still at its early stages, brands like Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Ducati, BMW, Suzuki, Triumph, KTM, Hyosung and Hero offer sports bikes in India. There are three or four categories of sports bikes – lightweight (entry-level), middleweight (super sport) and superbikes.  Sports Tourer is another category. While the categorization differs from country to country, these are the general classification.

A few of the popular sports bikes in India are highlighted below.

Entry-level Sports Bikes – These are those bikes, which come with a displacement of up to 500 cc.  Some of the most popular models in this segment are Honda CBR 150R, Honda CBR 250R, Yamaha YZF R15, KTM Duke 200, Bajaj Pulsar 200, Hero Karizma, Kawasaki Ninja 250R, TVS Apache RTR 250 and so on. The cost of these bikes starts from one-lakh rupees and upwards.

Super Sport Bikes – These bikes are more powerful, and they are speedier too. They come with a displacement of 600 to 700 cc. Some of the popular bikes  like KTM Duke 690, Triumph Daytona 675, Triumph Street Triple 675, Triumph America, Ducati Monster 796, Hyosung GT 650R and BMW F650 GS, fall in this category. They are available for prices ranging from five lakh and above.

Super Bikes to Liter-class Bikes – These bikes come with a displacement of 1000 cc or more. They are the most powerful and faster bikes around. Some of the best-selling superbikes include the likes of Honda CBR 1000RR, Suzuki Hayabusa 1300, Suzuki Bandit S, Suzuki Intruder M1800R and Ducati Hypermotorad among others. These super bikes cost from twenty lakh rupees and upwards, with prices often crossing  the 49-lakh rupees mark.

Though a few of the entry-level bikes could be affordable by most, the other categories are beyond the common man.
