Panjim is usually considered as India’s one of the most relaxed state capitals. It was the first place in Goa which was occupied by the Portuguese. In the early 16th century, it was used as a temporary headquarters by the Portuguese. The main church was also built during this period. However, Old Goa soon became a favourite place of the Portuguese. After becoming the capital city, the place started to grow. State Secretariat, Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Goa Medical College, the Viceroy’s Palace are some of the important landmarks here. Old Goa houses some impressive churches and ruins of the Portuguese era. It is situated 9 km east of the new Panjim. You can see the early European colonial monuments here amidst lush gardens. The overall setting of Old Goa is charming. Almost all the buildings are constructed of laterite stones and so, the red hue is attractive. Basilica of Bom Jesus dominates this part of the state. Besides, Chapel of Francis Xavier, Archaeological Museum, Church of St Cajetan there are many other churches and monuments here. Pilar is a little-known place of Goa, but it is an important pilgrimage for Roman Catholic. When you slowly move towards the North Goa, the beautiful beaches await you. With beaches, Agoda Fort, Chapora Fort, Fort Tiracol and Reis Magos bears some important history.
Baga, Candolim, Calangute, Agonda, Mandrem and Cavelossim are some of the famous beaches of the state. Sunbathing, partying and adventure activities are the popular phenomenon in these beaches. Many tourists consider Goa’s beauty to be best in the monsoon, even though the sea is sometimes furious.
Dabolim Airport is situated 19 km south of Panjim. It is well-connected to other major cities of the country. It has several daily flights from Mumbai and Delhi. It also receives charter flights from Europe. Airways is the best mode to travel to Goa. As after landing at the airport, it takes a maximum of two hours to reach any parts of the state.
